 HORIZONTAL MOVEMENTS

The juvenile traveled 3.351km during the study period of ten months and a half. Tracking speed was typically 1.7 km/hr with periods of faster swimming of up to 3.2 km/hr.  Following release, the shark stayed to the south of the tagging site, El Saladito, for 20days. By February, the shark had moved to the north and offshore of El Saladito. The next accurate position was recorded after almost two months to the east of Angostura near the border of Baja California Norte and Baja California Sur. During May and June the shark stayed close to the shore in the area between the northern east coast of Baja California Sur and Isla del Carmen. From July to October the shark remained in the area from San Jose Island to Puerto Escondido Island. The last position recorded was in December 23 at the north of La Paz Bay (Fig. 2). The shark started its way back to La Paz Bay by autumn. The track of the shark indicates that La Paz Bay could be also a secondary nursery area for the scalloped hammerhead.
